Tennis elbow is a very common situation which leads to elbow pain due to overuse of arm, forearm and hands muscles. The term came into use because it can be a common problem for people playing tennis. As the term “Tennis Elbow” uses the word ‘Tennis’, but you don’t have to play tennis or any racquet sports to get into this. However, many other sports and activities can also put you at the risk of Lateral epicondylitis.
Lateral epicondylitis is an inflammation of the tendons which join the forearm muscle on the outer part of the elbow. Due to the overuse, the forearm muscle and tendons become damaged repeating the same motions again and again, which leads to tenderness and pain on the outer part of the elbow.
Tennis elbow includes the tendons and muscles of your forearm, which extend your wrist and fingers. These forearm tendons may often known as extensors which attach the muscle to bone. Also, the tennis elbow usually involves the tendon is called the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (ECRB).
The ECRB muscle helps the wrist to stabilize when the elbow is straight. This situation mostly occurs during a tennis groundstroke.
Mostly, lateral epicondylitis affects the people in their dominant. Sometimes, it may also occur in the nondominant arm or both arm. It mostly affects the men than women between the ages of 30 and 50, although people of any age can suffer from it.
The following are the symptoms of tennis elbow.
- The grip strength becomes weak.
- Pain occurs on the outer part of the elbow which gradually and slowly increases.
- While shaking hands or squeezing objects pain becomes worse.
- While stabilizing or moving the wrist with force, during lifting or using tools, pain becomes worse.
- Tenderness occurs on the prominent part of the bone on the outside of the elbow.
The following are the causes of the tennis elbow.
- When the elbow bends and straightens, the muscle rubs against bony bumps which can cause to gradual wear and tear of the muscle over time.
- Any injury to the elbow due to repetitive and vigorous use of the forearm muscle.
- While serving the full power, snapping and turning the wrist.
- Using plumbing tools, painting, etc. excessively.
- PHYSICAL DIAGNOSIS:-
- Your doctor may ask you to straighten your wrist and fingers against resistance with your arm fully straight, to check the pain.
- Your physiotherapist may press on your lateral epicondyle to check the tenderness at the point.
- To check the pain on the lateral side of the elbow, your physiotherapist may also flexion your wrist.
- IMAGINARY DIAGNOSIS:-
- MRI:- The magnetic resonance imaging scan be ordered if the symptoms are related to other problem. It shows the brief images of the soft tissues which clarify the problem.
- EMG:- Your doctor may suggest you an electromyography to check out the nerve compression. As many symptoms and nerves of the tennis elbow are similar to the nerve compression.
- X-Ray:- X-Ray provides the clear images of the dense structures like bones. It can be taken to check out the arthritis of the elbow.
The following home treatment can be done by patient to reduce the pain for while.
- Firstly, patient should provide proper rest to the arm for recovery by ignoring the heavy and sports activities for some time.
- One can also reduce the chances of tennis elbow by wearing brace ( tennis elbow supporter ) on the back of your forearm and providing rest to your muscles and tendons.
- Cryotherapy (ice packs) is the most effective treatment one do at home.

- EXERCISE AND STRETCHES:-

- 6.)Forearm pronation and supination with a dumbbell
- 7.)Biceps curls/hammer curls with dumbbell
- 8.)Rhomboid and back strengthening exercise.
- 9.)Wrist flexor stretch
- 10.)Wrist extensor stretch
- ULTRASOUND:- Ultrasound includes passage of high frequency sound waves into the tissues. If it is applied regularly, this vibrates the molecules or in pulses can produce heat
